Background:
Uganda is ranked
among the lowest countries on the Human Development Index.
Most of the people living in Uganda are living in
poverty. Poverty
is hunger and lack of adequate shelter.
Poverty is being sick but not having the money to see a
doctor. Poverty
is not being able to go to school or have a job.
Poverty is living day to day with little hope for the
future.
You
dont have to look far in Uganda to find children who
dont have enough to eat and whose families dont have
enough money to send them to school.
These children have scraps of clothes to wear and
bellies swollen from parasites and malnutrition.
Often there is only one adult supporting six or more
children with only a dollar or two per day. Many of these children are orphans who have lost their
parents to AIDs and have been taken in by relatives who are
already desperately poor.
Without intervention these children are caught in a
cycle of poverty. |

When you are
sitting at home, far removed from this situation, it is easy
to forget that such poverty exists.
When you are surrounded by the realities of poverty
its hard to forget that so many have so little.
We are all citizens of this world and we must extend
our circle of compassion to include all people.
When children are suffering and dying from malnutrition
and preventable diseases we cannot turn our heads to look the
other way.
The pre-school, in
the village of Banda-Kyandaaza, is our way of giving back to
the community. When
we decided to spend more time in Uganda we realized that we needed to do
our part to help and that we needed to show others how they
could get involved. Buiga
Sunrise is entirely funded by private donations and operated
by volunteers. This
is a small project but we want it to grow.

Mission:
In Uganda, most
people living in poverty are children. Poverty denies children their basic human rights. To reduce
poverty we believe you should start with children.
One in four pre-school children are underweight for
their age; two in five are physically or cognitively
underdeveloped (World Bank).
Malnutrition diminishes a childs ability to perform
in school and increases the incidence of infectious disease.
These factors make it difficult for a child to escape
poverty.

Our
goal is to create a nurturing, fun environment that fosters
creativity and a desire for learning.
In addition to the standard curriculum, the program
will emphasize the values of kindness, cooperation, and
sharing. Our
children will also benefit from proper nutrition, vitamins,
basic healthcare and immunizations; thereby increasing their
learning potential and readiness for school. |

be the change you wish to see in the world. ~ Mahatma
