Buiga
Sunrise Preschool is currently under construction and we
hope to welcome the first students on February 28, 2005, which
is the beginning of the new school year. The land for the
school was purchased in August 2003 and Augustine Wamala, a
local contractor, was hired in August 2004. Steven Tamale,
Project Director at Buiga Farm Industries, is overseeing
construction. The school building will be a simple, two room
structure, with concrete floors, a corrugated iron roof and a
shaded verandah. There will be two pit latrines for the
children and one for the teachers and caretakers. We are
building a pump house to supply clean water and there is a
power line on the property to supply electricity to the
school. The property is currently being fenced and a large
garden is being planted to provide fresh fruits and vegetables
for the children. There is a large grassy area in front of the
school building and we hope to get some playground equipment
donated. Click

There
are many monthly costs to keep our pre-school running.
We have included a pie chart to illustrate exactly
where each dollar goes. Every
penny raised goes directly to the children and the school.
There are many volunteers who have contributed to this
project and keep it operating.
The
Gardens:
Buiga
Sunrise Preschool is being built on three acres of land. The extra land surrounding the school is being planted with
fruits, vegetables and grains for the childrens meals. The
children will be involved with helping to plant the seeds,
tend the gardens and harvest the fruit.
We believe that children learn many valuable lessons by
being involved with growing their own food.
The children will be provided with a glass of milk,
purchased from local farmers, and a piece of fruit each
morning. They
will also be given a meal at lunchtime, which will include
several of the following; rice, beans, maize meal, vegetables,
fish and eggs.
The
Fish Farm:
The
piece of land purchased for the school has a small stream
flowing through it. Jonathan
Kanyike-Nsubuga and Steven Tamale are helping us build several
ponds to raise fish for the childrens meals.
The ponds will be stocked with small Tilapia (a local
fish), which take six months to mature and reproduce. The
children will be involved with this project and can watch as
the fish mature and grow.
